De zomer van 1943

Zomer 1943. Nog steeds heersen de troepen van Hitler over Europa. Maar het tij begint langzaam maar zeker te keren. De Duitsers en Italianen zijn verslagen in Noord-Afrika, aan het oostfront heroveren de Russen de strategische stad Charkov, Duitse steden hebben het zwaar onder voortdurende Engelse en Amerikaanse bombardementen en de geallieerden zijn succesvol geland op Sicilië.

Tijdens de Trident Conferentie in Washington worden de plannen voor de grote invasie in West-Europa door de Amerikaanse president Rooseveld en de Britse premier Churchill nader uitgewerkt en de datum bepaald op 1 mei 1944. Om die landing op de Franse kust tot een succes te maken is een enorme strijdmacht nodig en vanaf de zomer van 1943 verandert Engeland in één groot legerkamp.

Het is dié situatie en periode die de inspiratiebron vormt voor de historische groep ‘Summer of 1943 – England’. Tot in detail gerestaureerde voertuigen van leger, marine en luchtmacht vormen de basis, de aankleding door de leden plaatst ze in het juiste tijdsbeeld. Die van de zomer van 1943 in Engeland.

Summer of 1943. Hitler’s troops still rule over Europe. But the times are changing.The Germans and the Italians are beaten in North-Africa, at the eastern front the Red Army was reconquering the strategic town of Charcov, German city’s were suffering under heavy bombardments and the Allied army’s have succesfully landed on Sicily.

At the Trident Conference in Washington are the plans for a big invasion in Western-Europe further developed by the American president Rooseveld and the British prime minister Chrurchill. And there was the date of Decision Day set on the first of may 1944. To succeed the invasion on the French coast, there was the need of an enormous armed force. And in the summer of 1943 England became one big army camp.
